Teachers Need Trauma-Informed Care, Too
Yes, yes, YES! It HAS to start with US! Even if you had an idyllic childhood, every single teacher and administrator out there has experienced trauma, to some degree, at some point in their lifetime--remember Covid?? Remember 9/11?
Part of setting a good example for our students is showing them that we're not perfect either. We all make mistakes, we all have bad days. It's how we handle them that's important. And although most of us are asked to include some form of SEL in our curriculum, teaching it isn't the same as being competent at it ourselves. Unless you've had some form of professional help to acknowledge and work through your own trauma, you probably haven't.
Any great trauma informed care MUST begin with the adults. That's why my business, Learning the Calm, offers Educator Wellness classes, as well as young children.
